Sea Maiden

WHO would be
A mermaid fair,
Singing alone,
Combing her hair
Under the sea,
In a golden curl
With a comb of pearl,
On a throne?

I would be a mermaid fair;
I would sing to myself the whole of the day;
With a comb of pearl I would comb my hair;
And still as I comb’d I would sing and say,
“Who is it loves me? who loves not me?”
I would comb my hair till my ringlets would fall,
Low adown, low adown,
From under my starry sea-bud crown."
~Afred Lord Tennyson 1830

Roseate Summer

"And if you are a rose, I am rose shadow."
~Rumi

"of the flowering of blossoms, of the purple waves of the sea."~Woolf

The warmth of the Summer sun nurtures the garden bringing forth an abundance of buds and blossoms.  The English and Tea Roses that we planted are growing well.    Roses are beginning to surround Sea Cottage.  We planted a cottage flower garden in our raised beds this year with only a few vegetables.  We chose white flowers and herbs.  Flowers are everywhere.  Vanilla Sunflowers, white Cosmos, white Verbena, and French thyme are spreading and flowering.  Sweet Peas climb the bamboo and their fragrance fill the air.    The Summer garden overflows with life.

In the midst of tending the flowers I find myself pausing to sketch all that surrounds me.  Later I retreat to the studio to add the palest of watercolours.   Some of these will be listed in my etsy shop but I am also painting roses for an art show that I was invited to participate in at our local Fine Art Center this Fall.

Of A Summer Sea

a quiet wash of the sea has come in

Sea Cottage is bathed in the white tide of a Summer sea

Peace flowing gently

"So fine was the morning except for a streak of wind here and there that the sea and sky looked all one fabric, as if sails were struck high up in the sky, or the clouds had dropped down into the sea."
~Virginia Woolf

Quiet, soft layerings of white with sun faded blues from the Summer sea.

Pure Waters

"a secret freedom opens through a crevice you can barely see."
-Rumi

I lay down on the barren shore and purest waters wash over me.  My long hair tangled in the seaweed like a mermaid.  A whisper of a psalm drifts through the air.

Undreamed Shores

Listen in silence, O coastlands
"In the stillness between two waves of the sea." -T.S Elliot

"To unpathed waters, undreamed shores."
  ~William Shakespeare

As the marine fog drifts in, a silence draws me into stillness.  The mystery beckons me... leading me... to unpathed waters...to the deep hidden places of the sea...where the songs that have never been heard are found.

"as when our soul was poured into our body and our body was lifted up from the waters."
-Margaret Ebner 1351

Hidden in the Silence

"Look at that sea- all silver and shadow with visions of things not seen."
~L. M. Montgomery

Nature leaves treasures everywhere on this earth...
hidden amidst the rocks, along the cliffs where the waves have just been.
Washed upon the empty shore under the dense fog of the northern sea...
in the shadow of waves and sand.

Hidden in the silence of earth and sea.  The quiet, deep places...on the silent shores.

Seawashed Sanctuary

When we bought our home its Mediterranean architecture reminded us of a Monastery.

.We envisioned the way that we would inhabit its space to create a seaside sanctuary.

Living in simplicity with minimal furnishings, openness, natural light and soft shades of the sea.  There is empty space and quietness that creates a sanctuary atmosphere.

Our home has become a refuge of peace and a calm dwelling place.

Solace of the sea

"I wonder sometimes if fog is just the clouds
that could not stand being away from the earth any longer. Just the ones that were too tired to float anymore, and wanted to feel soil once again."
~Tyler Knott Gregson

The Northern California Coast is a place of solace for me.  The beach is almost always empty and often covered in sheltering fog.  I will remain near its shore for as long as I can.
