In The Garden At Sea Cottage

I put the bistro table in the rose garden under the shade of our birch tree
for a rest on these hot days.

I am really enjoying our gardens this spring(almost summer). They have grown so much! Only 6 years ago this entire space was hardpan clay dirt. We have slowly planted everything ourselves on a very tight budget. My husband and sons poured the concrete, built raised beds and trellis', put in sprinkler systems, planted grass, filled in tons and tons of good dirt, and then crushed granite.

sugar snap peas

tomatoes from Italy(a friend of ours brought the seedlings over)

our first harvest of carrots

bird bath under the pear trees where the bird feeders hang

french lavender

herb garden- thyme, rosemary, oregeno, salvia, basil

rose trellis with cecile brunner climber

We have maple trees, pear trees, a plum tree, redwoods, river birch, crepe myrtle, and palm trees, roses, hydrangeas, herbs, and vegetables. It really is alot of hard work but the rewards are worth it. A peaceful respite from the cares of the world. Are you enjoying a garden?

Summer Holiday

Summer holiday has officially arrived here at Sea Cottage. College semester is over for both my girls and my son just finished his Junior year of H.S. I decided to begin this Monday by simplifying my computer activity so that I can spend more time with them outdoors in the gardens, by the pool, at the gym, on the bike trails, and dining downtown at our favorite cafe's. I deleted everyone on my facebook except family. It was either that or deactivate, but I want to keep my Seawashed page open. So you can still connect with me on facebook through my Seawashed page...just click on the sanddollar on my sidebar.

The 70th Birthday Party for my Dad was wonderful. The weather was beautiful (in the 80's) and everyone had a good time, especially my Dad. Yesterday we spent the day relaxing in our backyard, a walk to the park, and I even went for a ride on my beach cruiser.

The photo above is my inspiration for our dining room/sitting room. It is the only room in our home that has a collection of furniture that we have had since we were first married! Do you have a room like that? As we slowly have been able to buy new furniture and decorate Sea Cottage as we have envisioned, all the old furniture has gone into the sitting room. Thankfully that will be changing this summer as we also prepare to paint the oak cabinets in the kitchen white. I am looking forward to this summer holiday, are you?

Kerrie

A soft Sea washed around the House

“A soft Sea washed around the House
A Sea of Summer Air
And rose and fell the magic Planks
That sailed without a care —
For Captain was the Butterfly
For Helmsman was the Bee
And an entire universe
For the delighted crew.”
― Emily Dickinson

I am busy preparing our cottage for a 70th birthday party for my Dad this weekend. I am decorating from my collection of vintage floral blues with a soft sea washed around the house. I found two dresses to choose from to wear. One is called Blue Indian Coral and the other Yellow Asia. I am planning on having a good time. ox

Pacifica Sanddollar

Recently Roberta of Tresor Trouve purchased one of my Seawashed Sanddollar watercolor prints. She chose 'Pacifica' in grey. Pacifica was the first sanddollar I ever painted, so it holds a dear place in my heart. When I saw it on her blog tucked into the white mirror on her french seaside mantel my heart melted.
Isn't it lovely.

Roberta's beach cottage has been featured in many books and magazines, the latest being the summer issue of Romantic Country~ 'Down By The Bay'. Her french nordic coastal home captures the romance of the sea in shades of whites, greys, and faded lavenders. One of my favorite pieces in her home is this driftwood shelf with her collection of vintage bottles.

She also carries the Jeanne D Arc Living magazine. I just ordered the Summer issue. Thank you Roberta for letting me share my Seawashed sanddollar in your cape cod cottage.

R.Lauren Blue and White Roses

I think by now you all know that Sea Cottage decor is mostly white with espresso woods, fog grey, sand, and hints of sea blues. Those sea blues have always been in the pale turquoise hues, but this year I am bringing in the deeper blues that I find in all the shops. I really like the dark blues as in my scarf above...reminds me of the deep sea.

So when I came across this Ralph Lauren floral chintz 'Samantha' china on clearance, I most definetly gathered them all up. The blues blend well with the dark blue and well, I have fallen in love with roses again. Every cottage needs roses, right?.

and I found this little whitewashed table, that easily folds and can be used anywhere.

I love these new dishes and I love Ralph Lauren too! Besides Rachel Ashwell, Ralph Lauren is the only other designer I collect.

I have spent many days with my own children at the edge of the sea. Toes in the water, hands held, mist dampened hair, embracing quiet love enveloped in serene sea fog.

"I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers." ~Claude Monet

When I preuse my favorite magazines and blogs one of the things I am drawn to is the art. I especially like the look of small paintings propped up above a bed, on a shelf, a mantle, a dresser, or in the window sill of a kitchen.

It is one of the reasons I have been painting on small canvas for my etsy shop. I think we all lean towards creating what we love ourselves. I just finished two more paintings for The Sea Series and one for The Rose Series.

The Sea VII is an 8 x 10 in aqua blues...perfect for adding a bit of seaside calm to any room or a coastal splash to your summer cottage or beach house.

The Sea paintings are small enough to be propped up in a kitchen.

Or anywhere you like.

'Sophie' is the newest painting of The Rose Series.

'Sophie' fits right into any Rachel Ashwell setting.
