September's Calm

I am looking forward to September...and the beginning of Autumn. September and October are my favorite months to spend along the coast. The weather is calm, still, and foggy which creates beautiful glistening sea green waves. It's magical.

Writer's Nook...

"The lime trees were in bloom. But in the early morning only a faint fragrance drifted through the garden, an airy message, an aromatic echo of the dreams during the short summer night." ~Isak Dinesen

I have been watching Out Of Africa these past two days. It opens wide my heart to some way it sets me free through its beauty. I get lost in the layers of rain drenched land and sheer canopy draped over Karen's bed. I soak in every nook and cranny of her plantation homestead and farm.

"I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong hills..." ~Isak Dinesen

Creating a corner in my home inspired by my favorite movie happens to be a writing desk nook in my bedroom...

a place I can dream while I write or read.

"Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart." ~William Wordsworth

Writing notes to send in the postal to dear friends and family will always be a serene past time of mine. I love writing...and stationary... I collect it like coffee mugs.

Do you enjoy writing...or collecting stationary? Do you still write letters or notes?

My Mom recently asked me if I could write my 86 yr. old Grandma more often. She said that she just loves to get mail from me and at her age doesn't get many letters anymore. So, I have decided to make it a priority to write her at least once a month. It is the simple things that make us happy.

Happy writing!

If you need notecards just visit my shop... I can make you a custom set from any of my watercolor prints, just send me a message.

Cozy Cottage for School Days

Back to school days are here, which brings out the mothering instinct in me. I can't help myself from fluffing our cottage and making it a bit more cozy. Baking comfort foods for my children is of course a part of that. It doesn't matter how old they are, they still like it when I put on an apron and begin whipping up some batter in the white mixing bowl. Last week I baked banana oat muffins to provide a quick breakfast for the first days of school. They are simple and good so I thought you might like to give them a try.

Sea Cottage
Banana Oat Muffins

1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. oats
1 egg
3/4 c. milk
1 Tbsp. canola oil
2 tsp. baking powder
2 ripe bananas
1/3 c. sugar

Mix together all ingredients except the oats with an electric beater. Stir in oats. Spoon into greased or lined mini cupcake pans. Bake at 375 for 11 minutes or until done. Enjoy.

Waiting For Autumn

I am waiting for Autumn. In the mood for darker shades of grey. I've been freely moving away from the all white palette letting in more contrast and more 'me' and more 'us'. Do you allow yourself to just be 'you' in your home. I am trying to let everyone who dwells here at Sea Cottage to be more themselves. The men like the dark rustic industrial style. This dark brown coffee table is new and brings more of that raw, rustic, coastal feel to the room that we all like. My husband purchased it as an anniversary gift to each other. We just celebrated 24 years.

Have you seen the new Autumn Cottage magazine yet? It is quite beautiful. I recommend it.

Seaside Sundays

Our internet service has been down since Thursday. We are in a heatwave so that may have something to do with it. We are trying to stay cool but after five days of 100+ degree weather the air quality becomes bad. It's just best to stay indoors but we are getting a bit of 'cabin fever'. We won't see a cool down until Thursday. least I'm getting some cupboards cleaned out. Looking forward to saying goodbye to this summer heat and hello to Autumn breezes.

Summer Storm

"Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood."
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Yesterday a summer storm blew in.

The farmland behind our garden gate

We rarely see rain in summer so this storm reminded us that Autumn is approaching.

Peace to you on this Seaside Sunday.

Movies To Take You Away To The Coastal Countryside

We have had 100 degree weather all week. In order to keep cool on these hot afternoons we have enjoyed a bit of BBC movie watching. I had never seen the BBC versions of Sense and Sensibility or Persuasion and Oh how good they are.

The music in Persuasion is so beautiful and Sally Hawkins has always been a favorite of mine. Her eyes speak everything.

The scenery is stunning with such lush greenery and coastal views. If you have not yet seen them you surely must...if you like these sorts of movies. I found them both at Target for $10 each.

The coastal cottage in Sense and Sensibility has such character in all its shabbiness. But it can't compare to the scenes of water washing over the rocky seashore and shells blowing in the wind that Margaret has hung by twine everywhere. It makes me long for the coast.

But until I can set my own barefeet into the damp sand I will continue to paint my beloved Pacific.
The delta breeze is bringing in the cool down as I is predicted to be a lovely summer weekend in the 80's.
